本曲講述的是一戰末期的貝洛森林戰役(battle of belleau wood)。1918年德軍發動皇帝會戰，同盟國與協約國在馬恩河附近交戰。其中美國陸軍第2步兵師(下轄一個海軍陸戰隊旅)、第3步兵師與其他英法的友軍，一同對抗駐守於貝洛森林的德軍。其中美國海軍陸戰隊在本次戰役中，因為勇猛剽悍的表現而一戰成名，並被當時的德軍敬畏地給予了「惡魔犬(德文：teufel hunden)」的稱呼。
