【英文隨筆】Hitler rants

　

　　The scene 'Hitler rants' from the movie Downfall has always been a popular subject of parodies worldwide since its release in 2004.  There is even a channel entitled "Hitler rants parodies" on YouTube.  All sorts of hilarious subtitles have been edited to match Hitler's hysterical response to the final blow to Germany.

　

　　The scene, however, should not be made fun of in my opinion.  The movie depicted the downfall of Hitler, the culprit of the Holocaust in which millions were exterminated in the most gruesome way one can ever imagine.  It is no laughing matter.

　

　　When Hitler took off his glasses in the scene, his hand was trembling.  Bruno Ganz, playing the role of Hitler, spent months carefully observing the movement of patients with Parkinson's disease in preparation as Hitler was believed to have suffered from the disease in his last years.  Look at how Hitler's emotions subsided from fury to frustration.  He had no choice but to succumb to his fate.  The touch of fatalism can only be grasped when one stops laughing at his dramatic vent of venom.

　

　　Bruno Ganz, one of the greatest European actors over centuries, passed away at the age of 77 in December 2019.  He will always be remembered for his soul-searching performance.
