It was a picture that never could be erased from my brain. On a summer afternoon, I, a forty-year-old policeman, was jogging along the street in my short vacation. When running through the square in front of a business building, I shocked. Several people were waving their T-shirts from the windows. They were screaming, shouting, even yelling. "What happened? " I asked a passerby. " There is a big fire. Look, the KTV on the second floor is burning; the firefighters came and tried to save those who are still staying inside. " He answered. Many of the residents stepped toward the wall of the building and were dying to see what's going on with it.
A burning desire to help these miserable people, who were trapped in this concrete structure, filled my heart, but I had no idea. Dozens of fire engines had stopped on the ground. Unfortunately, the fire was in a place that was hard to approach. A cloud of black smoke floated out from the window. The building was getting hotter and hotter. Then, people's voice turned into silence, and the silence was like death. The only thing we could do was wait.
After the fire was put out, my supervisor commanded me to investigate everything about this terrible fire. Almost all the equipment was burnt. Wandering into the building, I felt I was in a dark maze. It is said that 6 dead bodies were being found in the staircase. They had tried to escape and go down the stair, but it was in vain.
The lucky survivor is a student, George. He followed me to go to the police station and talked to me. " I was the last person arriving at the KTV. At that time, my classmates sat on the sofa and sang the songs happily. There were 7 participants, including me. We were celebrating a girl, Anne's birthday. Everyone looks like enjoying the vibe, clapping hands when Anne was crooning a beautiful ballad with no lyrics. A boy gave her a microphone; the time seems to be paused. And then... I don't remember anything. " George illustrated to me with sadness.
" Oh, poor boy. " I felt so sorry about him. I almost lost my words after he told me that. Then, I stood up to bring a glass of lemonade to him. When walking, I saw his eyes filled with melancholy. He didn't drink it immediately; instead, he turned on the smartphone and showed me a photo. " This is Anne, who is the girl I fell in love with. You can never imagine how pretty she is before seeing her in yourself. " George whispered with a smile. Abruptly, I noticed that his right eye was in a bandage.
" Did you get hurt? " I cared about him. " Yes, " he said. " The doctor told me it will never recover. " Submerged by the gloomy mood, my mind flashed back to the fire scene again and again. The fire must be an accident, which took the lives of many innocent victims, but there was something strange. It was too difficult to explain my feeling.
" To be honest, I really want to be with Anne forever, but my classmates always laughed at me. They called me an ugly and short guy. As I appeared in Anne's birthday party, they complained that I was an unwanted guest. Hence, I was kicked out by those boys. And... " He removed the bandage slowly. " I bought gasoline and splashed all of it on the floor outside, IGNITING THE FIRE! I could go to heaven with Anne...However, I still didn't die. "
Looking at the horrifying, disgusting scar on his face, I trembled. " I'll arrest you! " I announced in anger. " You can't get away from this. " As soon as the fire alarm rang, he smirked at me. " The tragedy has not ended yet. Now, it's your turn. " In the blink of an eye, I saw those painful, hopeless faces of the deceased, creeping toward me.
